Sports Podiatrist Alessia Amadio discusses how Activity Trackers can be used for injury management and recovery
Recently I discussed my experiences with using a Fitbit and the general guidelines proposed for the target of 10,000 steps per day. Further to this, the Sports Podiatrists at Eastern Foot Care have discussed with some of our patients the practical applications for activity tracking devices from manufacturers like Fitbit and Garmin Vivofit and how these units can be used to monitor and control exercise load in injury management and recovery.
I believe there are two large clinical benefits with these devices:
- Monitoring activity levels in an individual returning from injury and helping to prevent re-injury
- Preventing the development of overuse injuries in those returning to exercise from a period of inactivity
When assisting a patient though rehabilitation of an injury and returning to normal activity and exercise, progression in activity is generally recommended at 10% incremental increases each week. Adjustment of your daily step goal on your Fitbit can assist you to monitor your progress through your weekly activity goals, helping to prevent over-activity. I have found that patients that have used their activity trackers in such a way were able to monitor pain levels in relation to activity levels, helping them to establish physical tolerances and allowing for more tailored and effective injury treatment and rehabilitation in consultation with their podiatrist.
This 10% weekly increase in activity levels is also recommended to those commencing a new exercise regime. Similarly, using a tool such as a Fitbit, allows for accurate monitoring of increases in activity suitable to current fitness levels. This aids in prevention of many lower limb overuse injuries commonly seen from the “too much too soon” approach to exercise.
By no means is a Fitbit or similar the essential tool for everyone recovering from an injury or making a return to exercise, but in an era filled with technological advancements it certainly conjures many exciting ideas of how technology can continue to aid health care and patient management. I look forward to continuing to explore the benefits fitness trackers may have on my patients and on my own health and fitness, all the while notching up my daily 10,000 steps.
